Healthy employees are happy employees - and more importantly in terms of business - productive ones!

The good news is that the amount of working days lost to sickness has been reducing over the past decade or so.  131 million days were lost due to sickness absences in the UK in 2013, down from 178 million days in 1993.

More and more people are taking responsibility for their own health and getting involved in sports like running, cycling, walking, tennis, horse riding etc  Still more would be involved in sport if they were given that bit of encouragement from their employers and both employer and employee would benefit.

Company health iniatives are extremely popular and extremely worthwhile.  It is a win, win situation for employer and employee.  Physical exercise not only promotes physical fitness but lifts depression and clarifies the mind.  Encourage employees to feel part of the company team by providing  them with promotional products that are useful in their sport and you will be encouraging employees to exercice and also showing them that you care about their health and wellbeing.

Sporting promotional merchandise is also an excellent way of getting your brand integrated fully into people's home lives and providing that feel good factor.

One of the most interesting facts that emerges from the health at work figures is that it is the biggest companies ie those with the largest workforces who report the highest sickness levels.  Of course this could be down to any number of reasons.  My theory is that perhaps employees feel that in a larger workforce they "won't be missed" as much as in a smaller company and are more likely to give in to the minor illnesses.  Maybe in a larger workforce employees don't feel that they count as much as those in smaller companies.  Prove to them that your workforce are wrong to feel like that and you do care.  Give them promotional merchandise that encourages them to exercise such as promotional pedometers, printed sportswear, brandedwater bottles etc.

Such programs promote a healthier lifestyle, hence better work productivity overall. Here are some interesting facts demonstrating this:

  • Workers who ate healthy the entire day were 25 percent more likely to have higher job performance.
    • Workers who exercised for 30 or more minutes three or more days a week were 15 percent more likely to have higher job performance.
  • Workers with well-managed chronic diseases experience higher productivity than individuals without chronic disease who are obese and do not exercise.
•Companies that support workplace health with promotional branded health products have a greater percentage of employees at work every day.
  • Because employee health frequently carries over into better health behaviors that impact the employee and his or her family (such as nutritious meals cooked at home or increased physical activity with the family), employees may miss less work caring for ill family members as well.

To summarise, there isn’t a person involved who doesn’t benefit from health and wellness promotion within an organization. Here’s to good health, useful branded promotional merchandise…and good work.
